My 5 Top Picks from HOMEMAKERS Expo 2017

If you’re a follower of the blog, you’ll know that I’m OBSESSED with a cheeky bit of DIY and slowly doing up my little home. There are few things as satisfying as coming up with an idea in your head, and then being able to translate that into an actual concept in your home, which is why I love DIY. So, you can imagine that visiting the HOMEMAKERS Expo 2017 was basically like Mecca for me. So many beautiful things, so much to see, and loads of inspiration. Here are my top 5 spots for inspiration at this year’s expo – make sure that you get there this weekend!

Coote and Wench Design Company

Coote and Wench immediately caught my eye – their mix of vintage lighting, mirrors, copper, and plants basically made me feel like I was in my own house. They make all their lights themselves, which means that each and every one is unique and will create a real focal point in your home. I love their stuff, and I’m already eyeing up some things on their website that I’m gonna start saving for. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with their newest creations.

The I  Jozi Graffiti Wall

One of my favourite things about HOMEMAKERS Expo is that they’re always coming up with new ways to feature some of the incredible designers and artists that call South Africa home. This year, they’ve enlisted the skills of three amazing graffiti artists to explore and highlight some of Joburg’s most iconic scenes right in front of your eyes on theI ♥ Jozi Graffiti Wall, and it’s mesmerising. I honestly just stood and watched them work for about 20 minutes, it’s that incredible. Graffiti artists Damn Vandal, Giffy, and Zesta have some truly inspirational skills, and, if you’re anything like me, seeing their work will give you some awesome ideas on how to upgrade your home in a cool urban way. Follow Damn Vandal, Giffy, and Zesta on Instagram to see some of their work.

Bargain Books’ Book Nooks

Gosh, that heading is quite a mouthful, isn’t it?! My absolute favourite spot at HOMEMAKERS Expo this year is the Book Nook section that they’re created in partnership with the wonderful people over at Bargain Books. Six different design and decor companies have created six different book nooks, from Patio Warehouse’s amazing outdoor chill spot, to CTM’s bath filled with Mills & Boon novels. The best part? All the books are available to buy – even the ones in the bathtub, if that’s your taste…

Visit Bargain Books’ Book Nooks at HOMEMAKERS Expo 2017 for: some incredible titles that you can take home, and some fresh ideas on how to upgrade your house reading experience.

Exhibit Art

I can’t quite get over how beautiful these handmade driftwood sculptures are from Exhibit Art. Hailing from Sedgefield, artist Bevan van Druten has been collecting driftwood from the river estuaries and forests for about 10 years, which he then makes into these incredible sculptures. I’m obsessed with the heads in particular – don’t you think one of them would look amazing on my lounge wall? Stop and have a chat with Bevan in person – he’s endlessly interesting and lovely to chat to about his work.

Visit Exhibit Art at HOMEMAKERS Expo 2017 for: beautiful examples of breathtaking art and cool earthy design.

The Builders Interactive Zone

I’ve done some pretty great projects with Builders before, and I’d hazard to say that I spend most of my paycheque there every month. So I instantly gravitated towards the bright yellow banners and found myself in the Builders Interactive Zone, where I was given the opportunity to use their Fired Earth Chalk Paint to decorate my own picture frame – SO FUN. I went for Bastille Pink because I’m having a total pink phase at the moment, and I loved working with the chalk paint. The team there are on-hand to teach you different techniques, so you can decorate to your heart’s content. And because chalk paint dries so quickly, I was able to just pop my new frame into my bag and bring it home with me. Check up the Builders DIY Theatre Programme here so that you don’t miss out.

Visit The Builders Interactive Zone at HOMEMAKERS Expo 2017 for: personalised frame making, and chalk paint inspiration for updating that old wardrobe you’ve got sitting at home.
